Practical nervous system tools for the days that feel like too much.
Motherhood is beautiful, meaningful, and deeply rewarding—but it can also be incredibly overwhelming. Many moms carry an invisible mental load every day: schedules, meals, school forms, emotions, work responsibilities, and the constant pressure to “hold everything together.”
During this week’s Moms in Motion (Monday Reset Sessions) live, we talked about something many mothers experience but rarely talk about openly: what it feels like when your nervous system is overwhelmed.
That moment when everything feels loud.
When your patience is thin.
When your brain feels overloaded.
Those moments don’t mean you’re failing. They usually mean your nervous system is simply overstimulated and dysregulated.
The good news is that there are simple ways to reset.
Why Overwhelm Happens (And Why It’s Normal)
Stress isn’t just emotional—it’s biological.
When we experience stress, the body activates the autonomic nervous system, releasing hormones like cortisol that prepare us to react quickly to perceived threats. This system is designed to help us survive short bursts of stress, but modern motherhood often creates constant low-level stress throughout the day.
Research shows that higher levels of maternal stress can affect emotional regulation and parenting interactions if that stress goes unregulated.
Studies have also found that maternal stress can influence both mothers’ well-being and child development, including sleep patterns and behavioral regulation in infants.
This doesn’t mean moms need to be perfect. It simply highlights how important it is for mothers to have tools that help regulate their nervous system during stressful moments.
And that’s exactly what this week’s reset is about.
Recognizing the Signs of Nervous System Dysregulation
Most moms don’t realize they’re dysregulated until they’re already overwhelmed.
Common signs include:
• Feeling easily irritated or short-tempered
• Mental overload or racing thoughts
• Physical tension in your body
• Feeling overstimulated by noise or touch
• The urge to snap, shut down, or withdraw
These signals are your nervous system saying: “I need a pause.”
Three Simple Ways to Reset Your Nervous System
During the live, I shared three categories of tools moms can use to calm their nervous system in real time.
1. Physical Reset
Your body often needs to reset before your mind can.
Examples:
• Taking 5 slow deep breaths
• Stepping outside for fresh air
• Stretching your shoulders or neck
• Splashing cold water on your face
Even 60 seconds of physical regulation can begin calming your stress response.
2. Mental Reset
Sometimes overwhelm comes from too many thoughts at once.
A mental reset can include:
• Writing down the top three priorities for the day
• Repeating a calming phrase
• Taking a short pause before reacting
A simple reminder like: “I don’t have to solve everything right now.” can interrupt the stress cycle.
3. Environmental Reset
Your environment influences your nervous system more than you might realize.
Small changes can help:
• Lowering background noise
• Stepping into a quieter room
• Tidying one small area
• Opening a window or changing lighting
You’re not trying to control everything—just creating a small moment of calm.
Creating Your Calm Reset Plan
To make these tools easier to use in real life, I created a simple one-page guide you can screenshot or print.
The Calm Reset Plan helps you identify:
• Signs you’re becoming dysregulated
• The triggers that overwhelm you most
• Your three go-to reset tools
• A calm phrase you can use in stressful moments
• An exit strategy when you feel yourself about to snap
• A simple 4PM rescue plan for the time of day many moms feel most exhausted
Because the goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is having a plan before overwhelm hits.
A Gentle Reminder for Moms
You don’t need to be calm all the time to be a good mom.
You just need ways to come back to calm when things get overwhelming.
Resetting your nervous system is not selfish.
It’s part of caring for yourself and your family.
And the truth is, every mom needs those resets sometimes.
